The Canadian Press launches the country’s first 24/7 multimedia news service for BlackBerry smartphones together with Canada’s leading news brands

The Canadian Press Mobile app is now available on BlackBerry App World

Toronto, ON - The Canadian Press introduced the next phase of its mobile venture today with the launch of English and French news applications optimized for BlackBerry® smartphones from Research In Motion. Canada’s trusted news leader partnered with CTVglobemedia, Torstar, Transcontinental and The Associated Press to unveil the country’s most comprehensive news app, now available as a paid download on BlackBerry App WorldTM.

The Canadian Press Mobile is Canada’s first app to automatically load and refresh the latest local, national and international news from many trusted sources all in one place, available for an introductory price of C$3.69 (US$2.99) for a one-year subscription. Users can quickly and easily view, search, save, share and rate news and photos personalized to their choice of postal codes and topics – without having to set up RSS feeds or visit multiple news sites.

“Canada’s news leaders are joining forces to introduce a one-stop mobile news app that offers a superior experience on BlackBerry smartphones like the BlackBerry® Storm™, BlackBerry® Bold™, BlackBerry® Curve™ and the BlackBerry® Pearl™,” said Eric Morrison, president of The Canadian Press. “For a penny a day, Canadians can get the fastest, widest coverage of local, national and world news from many respected providers, all displayed on an intuitive interface developed on AP’s award-winning mobile platform. AP’s success is considered an industry game-changer, so now Canadians benefit from its experience with this really slick news app that users will love.”

Content covering business, sports, hockey, entertainment, technology, science, travel and wacky news will come from more than 20 communities and a growing list of quality sources, including:

  • The Canadian Press, exclusive distributor of AP’s global news in Canada and the Host National News Agency for the 2010 Winter Games, with 250 journalists in 14 bureaus across the country.
  • The Globe and Mail, Canada’s No.1 national newspaper.
  • CTV, Canada’s No.1 television network with coverage from British Columbia, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.
  • The Toronto Star, Canada’s largest daily newspaper.
  • Transcontinental Media, Eastern Canada’s leading community newspaper publisher with coverage from Nova Scotia’s Amherst Daily News, Cape Breton Post, Truro Daily News and The News (New Glasgow); Prince Edward Island’s Journal Pioneer (Summerside) and The Guardian (Charlottetown); Saskatchewan’s Moose Jaw-Times Herald and Prince Albert Herald; Newfoundland’s The Telegram (St. John's) and The Western Star (Corner Brook).

“We’re excited to be part of this unrivalled network of media sources giving Canadians the convenience of an all-in-one news app tailored for their BlackBerry smartphones,” said Kevin McIntosh, director of digital publishing for Transcontinental Newspapers. “BlackBerry users tend to be voracious consumers of news, so our app keeps them plugged in to the latest stories wherever they go, even on the subway or on a plane when there’s limited to no Internet connection.”

The new application will be demonstrated during CTIA Wireless 2009 (April 1-3) at AP Booth No. 1400-H in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

“AP continues to listen to user feedback as we work with The Canadian Press on future versions of its app to deliver an unparalleled multimedia experience,” said Jeffrey Litvack, general manager of mobile and emerging products at AP. “Soon Canadians will be able to flip through photo galleries and watch news video with one touch. The Canadian Press Mobile will also be customized for other handhelds in tandem with our efforts to optimize AP’s mobile news offering for every smartphone in the marketplace.”

In the coming weeks, content from more newspapers and broadcasters will be added, including the Winnipeg Free Press in Manitoba and the Hamilton Spectator, Waterloo Region Record and Guelph Mercury in Ontario.

Today’s release of the news app for BlackBerry smartphones follows last week’s launch of http://news4mobile.ca and http://nouvellesmobile.ca – The Canadian Press Mobile sites accessible for free on the Internet using a BlackBerry® Browser, but with less functionality and customization options than the downloadable app.

Users can visit BlackBerry App World (www.blackberry.com/appworld) on their BlackBerry smartphone to download The Canadian Press Mobile from the “News & Weather” category.
