SMART Introduces Prepaid, Flat-Rate BlackBerry Data Packages in the Philippines

Manila, the Philippines - With more and more Filipinos discovering the convenience of mobile Internet, leading wireless services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART) has partnered with Research In Motion (RIM) to offer prepaid, flat-rate, unlimited BlackBerry® data packages to customers in the Philippines. The prepaid options enable subscribers to use their BlackBerry smartphones to access their email and engage in other online activities at a fixed and affordable cost.

The new initiative makes SMART the first mobile operator in the Philippines – a predominantly prepaid market – to offer the powerful BlackBerry solution on a prepaid, flat-rate, unlimited basis, providing extremely flexible and affordable choices for consumers.

The SMART offering enables more individuals to take advantage of a BlackBerry smartphone and service, which had been only accessible to corporate clients and postpaid customers.

Individuals subscribing to the prepaid BlackBerry Daily or Weekly packages from SMART will have seamless and unlimited access to all the advanced features offered by BlackBerry smartphones, including push email, social networking sites such as Facebook®, MySpace™ and Flicker®, web browsing, and instant messaging services such as BlackBerry® Messenger, Yahoo! ® Messenger, Windows Live™ Messenger, and Google™ Talk – all for a flat-rate, price of P50 or P300*.

Details of the BlackBerry Daily or Weekly packages are as follow:

  • BlackBerry Daily Package: offers 24 hours of unlimited data and full access to the BlackBerry platform for only P50.
  • BlackBerry Weekly Package: offers 7 days of unlimited data and full access to the BlackBerry platform for only P300.

SMART customers can subscribe to the prepaid BlackBerry service packages using any BlackBerry smartphone by following the simple instructions below:

BlackBerry Daily Package: Text BB DAY to 2207 to enable the P50 Daily package
BlackBerry Weekly Package: Text BB WEEK to 2207 to enable the P300 Weekly package

Once the package is activated, the subscriber will receive a message indicating that the transaction was successful along with the terms and conditions of the service. Payment for the BlackBerry Daily or Weekly subscription will immediately be deducted from the subscriber’s prepaid load. Subscribers will need to maintain a minimum of P1 in their account balance while subscribed to the service.

“Through this new offer, we’re empowering our subscribers by putting a wide range of mobile Internet services -- from business to entertainment -- in the palm of their hands, at the least cost. This strengthens our ‘Internet for All’ advocacy of bringing the benefits of the Internet to more people. We are glad to be the first operator to launch prepaid BlackBerry service packages in the country,” said Danilo Mojica, head of SMART’s Wireless Consumer Division.

“Prepaid BlackBerry service plans are increasingly popular in other markets around the world and we are delighted to partner with SMART to now launch new prepaid service plans in the Philippines. SMART’s new daily and weekly prepaid plans will allow many more customers in the Philippines to purchase a BlackBerry smartphone,” said Gregory Wade, Managing Director, Southeast Asia, Research In Motion.

SMART’s announcement comes with the recent launch of the BlackBerry® CurveTM 8520, the most approachable BlackBerry smartphone. The handset will soon be sold from selected SMART Wireless Centers nationwide and from the SMART online shop https://shop.smart.com.ph

The bucket-priced BlackBerry service packages are initially available to SMART prepaid subscribers, but will soon be offered to postpaid SMART Gold subscribers.

For any inquiry, SMART subscribers may text BB HELP to 2207 or call the SMART hotline *888 from their SMART handset or 888-1111 from any landline.
